Hi team!

I’m Julia, G.Law’s newest team member. It’s been 6 short months since I officially joined the team as a protector of legacies (fun name for an estate planning lawyer) but I feel like I have been here forever.

A little background

I stumbled across the G.Law Instagram page a few years ago and was shocked at first, that a law firm was on Instagram! And second, how funky and colourful this place seemed to be. As someone who had spent the last 5 years working in very traditional workplaces, I was blown away (and fan girling a little)!

PINK? Fixed fees? On your website for the world to see?? *faints*

I said to myself and the manifestation gods, I will work there one day.

A couple of years later, while on a 6 month trip around Aus with my fiancé, I plucked up the courage to reach out to Nic about “potential opportunities” and whaddya know? They were looking to expand the team!

Whether you believe in fate, God or bloody good luck, the stars aligned and here I am today feeling like I’ve been part of the team since day one.

So, as I’ve pointed out G.Law is VERY different to the average law firm.

Here’s 5 things that blew me away about G.Law

1. No BS.

We do what we say we’re going to do.

We use plain language. We speak like we are speaking to our Mum or our best friends.

We give recommendations (yes or no), not statements of position.

We let you know what you can do, not what you can’t.

2. Flexible work environment

And in line with the no BS thing, we actually mean it!

For me this means wearing active wear so I can go for a midday walk, heading off on a Thursday to visit far-away family, working from home and being able to schedule life admin appointments on work days.

And some day in the future, when I have babies I know I’ll be supported as my priorities change but work still remains something I’m very passionate about, and part of my life.

Added bonus, I get to help create what my parental leave and back to work worlds look like!

3. No time recording or billing targets

When you’re a lawyer (or accountant, etc.) you are trained to record every second of your day in 6-minute increments and all those increments need to add up to your billing target.

It’s adviser focussed instead of client focussed.

No time recording here because a) there’s no need – we have up front fixed fees and b) that’s not how our worth is measured.   

When someone calls me to talk about something that’s important to them, I can just listen instead of thinking about the time and how much it’s costing.

4. Client Focus

We use diagrams not lengthy letters of advice (yawn) that no one wants to read.

Every step of our process, we ask ourselves, how can we make this easier for our client?

We care about our clients and what’s going on in their lives.

It’s our job to lay out all the options for our clients but we aren’t afraid to give strong advice on what we think is the best step. Not what will cost the most or is the most complicated. Sometimes simple works best. We will always tell you what we think will work best for you.

5. Colour – everywhere

Our website, our wills packages, our clothes!

It might seem silly but being surrounded by colour makes not-fun things (talking about death), a whole lot more enjoyable.

And, never ever underestimate the power of confetti.
